I cannot believe we are over half way to half term already! This term, though short, is always very tiring for the children as they are still recovering from the sensory overload which is Christmas – presents, family, travel, special food etc etc! We really need another week afterwards to recover!

Despite tiredness and sick bugs aplenty,  the children have been learning lots. We have been adding up and finding number bonds in maths, learning stories from other cultures in English, and our topic work has linked to English with multicultural art, including kente cloth and mendhi patterns, and lots of geography. You could ask your child:

Where is the equator? Is it hot there, or cold?

What would you need to pack for a trip overseas? (Passport etc)

Can you tell me any of the continents?

……and hopefully they may remember some of the answers!!

We have had a visitor, Mrs English who came to show the children her blogs baskets, woven from elephant grass in Ghana. The children learned about how the grass grows and is picked so that it can replenish itself, and how the weavers make the baskets. They had a go at shaping the baskets as well, which they really enjoyed.

We now have the reading rocket up in class. Please do record in the reading records when you read at home so your child can move up the rocket. I know this is a laboursome task on busy weekday nights, but regular reading with your child will help them make progress in school and provide them with wonderful opportunities as they go through the school in terms of the books they are able to independently access.
