Hi Ash Class

What do you notice about today? You’re right! The month has changed! We are nearly at the end of your time in Year 1. Although I am really sad that I won’t see some of you again in my class, I know you will go on to great success in Year 2, and have an amazing time with your teacher there.

Today Mr Galvin would like you to repeat what you did on Monday, but this time, instead of throwing she would like you to jump! Use the same line you did on Monday, if you can, and give yourself five tries. Measure each jump. How far did you get? This website gives some tips for grown ups.
Watch this video for some tips on  Long jump.

Unless you secretly live at Petworth Park you might not be able to get quite the same run up, but you can watch the landing! If you can’t jump with a run up, try a standing jump, like we did at school. Watch Jenson having a go here….

Jenson jumps!

In English, I’d like you to write verse two of your poem. Remember the tips from yesterday!

We’ve had some real fun making some sushi from play doh at school, and trying to pick it up with chopsticks, can you have a go at home?

Bethany and her mum also made this amazing sushi, which they ate! Amazing!

Have a lovely day

Hi Ash Class

Continuing with our work on Japan…

I’d like you to design a Japanese Kimono! These are a bit like dressing gowns, but usually very beautiful. They have wide sleeves and a belt. You can find out about kimonos here

See if you can use some traditional symbols and colours in your kimono design.

Todays sports and maths challenge is running! You can do just as Mo Farah says but you have to run for five minutes. How many times can you run up the stairs? Around your garden? Between two points in Petworth Park. Make sure you understand how to use a timer, on a phone or watch, and that it starts and stops correctly.

For English, I’d like you to to continue working on your poem. We are going to miss the first verse, where Mo introduces himself, then work in short verses, we are going to try to do three.
The verses:

  1. must – be 4 lines.
  2. Have the second and fourth lines rhyming.
  3. Keep to the rhythm.

When you have written your verse, read it aloud to check it. Remember, it can be as simple as:

Run/Skip to the ……..

Run/Skip to the ……..

Run/Skip for a ………

Run/Skip for a ………

Or you can change the verb, the doing word to something you like more than running!

Hi Ash Class!
This is an exciting week because Mr Galvin has set all of us some work on Japan, and sports, as this year we would have seen the Olympics, in Japan. So, this week, your maths and topic activities will be centred around Japan and hopefully will be really exciting. You could put all your work together in a special folder, make a PowerPoint or a video or present each days work individually.

In English we are going to continue to think about Mo Farah and this week we will be trying to write our own poem in the same style…..but a word of caution! A little pep talk from Mrs Wiggs…..,if you’ve been doing lots of writing without any complaint, you don’t have to listen 😁

You have to write….some days you won’t like it, some days you might think you can’t do it. Some days it seems too hard, or you just don’t fancy it.. But give it a try. I KNOW you can all write really well!

So today, I want you to write a few sentences starting like this….

Run round the….

Run to the….

Anything you like, but I want you to start experimenting with how the words and sentences sound together.

Mr Galvin would like you to try some throwing, and measuring! If you have a garden, do this in the garden. Equally, you can do it on a walk or in Petworth Park. If you can’t get outside try to find a long corridor, and remove all breakables. You can throw anything, but a small, light soft toy would work well. You could also fill an old sock with rice, or broken pasta, tie the end up, and use that.
Mark a start line. You can use this all week. Throw your item as far as you can. Mark where it has landed. Can you measure how far it went? Give yourself five tries. How far could you throw it? Try different throws, underarm and

If you have access to the internet, can you have a look at Japan, using it (Google Earth us a great place to start) or an atlas. What do you notice about the landscape? Do you think Japan is hot, or wet? How can you prove this (think about the Equator) Can you find Mount Fuji? What is it? I’m not going to give you a link for this, but can you use google to do a search with proper search terms, as we practised in class?

Have a lovely day

Mrs Wiggs. Xx

Hi Ash Class

I am TOoooooo HOT 😅

But….. today, Mrs Groves would like you to have a think about a man named Zaccheus and how a meeting with Jesus changed his life. Zaccheus was a tax collector, and not a very nice man, but he changed his ways after this meeting. Mrs Groves would like you to find out about Zaccheus and think, if you were a reporter and asked him these questions, what would he say in response….

What was your job?

Where did you meet Jesus?

How did meeting him change you?

Do you think Jesus is important for everyone?

Do you think Jesus can change other people’s lives?

And excitingly, Mrs Ashton Smith has set you a Forest School task! You might want to go outside for this, or for a walk with your family. Listen to the story of superworm and then you are going to go on a bug hunt! Can you find any strange insects? What are they? Then can you use sticks and other natural items to create a giant bug? It can be flat on a lawn or patio, or if you’re feeling crazy, it can be 3D!

Finally, a maths game. Play along with me at home. Can you complete them all? IMG_4616

Have a wonderful weekend,

Hi Ash

Today we are going to continue to think about subtracting in maths. Please make sure you are forming numbers correctly and that you know what the number you are saying looks like!

So, here is your maths starter

And then a worksheet Lesson-4-Compare-number-sentences-2019

In English, Id like you to think about the ways you are moving, and how you are moving around your house. Without writing a poem, because we will come to that later, can you come up with some different ways of moving, and how or where you do it? For example….

I jog round the kitchen table.

I leap out of the back door…..Floor

I swing round the gate….Late

I charge up the stairs….chairs, stares.

If you can start to think of words that rhyme, that is great, I have put some in bold.

For phonics, still thinking about those tricky words, can you have a go at the tricky word trucks. You should know all these words to read and spell by the end of the year. Tricky word trucks

Finally some art. Lots of you had a huge amount of success creating medals for nurses. Can you now create a trophy for a winner at the Olympics? It can be made from construction toys, or any recycling you have around. Send me a photo of you winning it!

Hi Year 1

Hope you are all doing ok.

As usual, here is the maths Starter and worksheet Lesson-3-Subtraction-crossing-10-2-2019

If you are struggling with any if the concepts presented, practise them using equipment. The more you can practise with concrete objects, the more in depth your understanding will be.

For phonics, can you write down the three tricky words we have been practising, in three different ways? Look at the photo below for my ideas. You could make the words from play doh, or write them in sand if you prefer. Then can you write the words in a sentence.

For your English, can you find pairs of rhyming words in the Mo Farah poem? Can you find ten pairs of rhyming words? For example chair/stair. Are the rhyming sounds always the same?

Finally time for some athletics, can you have a go at hurdling? Lay a jumper or other object on the floor outside. Can you jump over it without touching it at all?
Can you lay two next to each other and jump over them both without touching either? How many jumps can you do? Can you find something a little higher to jump over (be safe and check with a grown up) or could you build a hurdle with Lego, or a long stick propped up?

See you tomorrow

Morning Ash Class!

I hope everyone is okay and looking forward to today’s learning.

Your maths starter and worksheet are here.Lesson-2-Subtraction-crossing-10-1-2019

For English, we are going to clap out the rhythm of Ready, Steady Mo! Can you tap it out like I do in the video, finding the beat using your hands, or feet? If you feel crazy, you could jog to the beat! Here are the words to the poem if you want to read it yourself.

For phonics please could you have a go at the following activity. You need to read the sentence at the bottom, and swap some of the words in that sentence, for some at the top. We found it tricky in class!Sentence Substitution

Finally, Mo Farah is Somalian. Can you find Somalia on a map? What do you think the climate would be like there? How do you know? Can you find out what types of things might grow there? This might be a good place to start Somalia

Hi Ash Class, how are you all?

It has been lovely seeing a few more children back at school. Please don’t worry if you are not planning to send your child back at all, or may do later, the work we are doing in class is exactly the same as we are doing on here.

For English, we are starting a new book which you can listen to hereReady Steady Mo!. It is called Ready Steady Mo! By Mo Farah and Kes Gray. Listen along with the story and then talk to your grown up about what you noticed about it…what makes it different, or the same, as other stories you have heard?

For phonics, in class we are focussing on the tricky works “some”, “come” and “said”, moving onto “she”, “there” and “were” – we have come up with some mnemonics to help us remember them. For said, we had “silly Anne is dancing” – can you come up with your own mnemonics for those three tricky words? Share them with me and I will put them on the blog. Make sure you practise reading, writing and saying the words out loud, in context.

Maths follows our usual pattern, so here is your starter, and the Lesson-1-Add-by-making-10-2019 to complete. If you are struggling with watching these, or printing them, please let me know. Remember, you can always use your own ten frames, and any small parts to help you, such as pasta, beads or buttons or even small teddy bears/figures.

For your final task, I’d like you to find out who Mo Farah is! He is a REAL person, not just an author…and what is the mobot? Ask your grown up, they might know.Mo Facts

Hi Ash Class

For todays RE, Mrs Groves would like you to find out about Guru Nanak. Use the information below to find out about him, and then can you write down some of his inspirational characteristics? You could draw and label, you could write, or you could video your ideas.

Guru Nanak

Then I would like you to listen to this story of Stick Man. Mrs Ashton Smith has asked you to build a new home for Stick Man, where he can be safe from predators and bad weather. You can use whatever you like to build your home, but at school we have used sticks and boxes.

Mrs Ashton Smith reads the story here Stick Man

While you are out and about in nature, have a look for beautiful things you can find. Andy Goldsworthy creates beautiful pictures and sculptures using natural materials like leaves, twigs and ice. Have a look at some of his work. Do you like it? Can you make something like it? You could use the ideas in the slideshow or come up with your own.

Have a lovely weekend, I miss you all,

Love

Hi Ash Class

So, we have finished Toys in Space, so now I would like you to write a book review! Give me your honest opinion of the original story. If you can’t print, design your own template with some questions on it. book_review_template

For maths your problem solving starter is here and your worksheet is Lesson-4

Finally, some PE. In school we have been working on athletics – so jumping over hurdles, running and things like that. This website will give you some ideas of exercises you can do at home.Athletics
