Hi Ash Class,

How was your half term? I hope you enjoyed the sunshine and the time with your family. I will be back in school from today, but do not worry, much of what I post on here will be the same as I am teaching at school. I will only change it if I think you might not have specific equipment that you might need.

So today we will be starting a new piece of writing. This will take the same form as much of our English work has at school before, so you should know what to do. Today I am going to introduce the story “Toys in Space” by Mini Grey. I would just like you to listen to the story and talk about it with someone in your family. Think about these questions:

  • Who is the main character?
  • Who is your favourite character? Why?
  • Do you think the toys really go to space?

I’d like you to start thinking about retelling the story – it is important that you can do this from memory. If you can make up some actions to help you do this, please do. I will share my actions tomorrow.

Toys in Space

Phonics

This is a game based on squares, which you might have played before. The object of the game is to join the dots to make a square. Every square you make is a point, but you must read the word IN the square before you can have the point.

Squares board

For maths we are going to be thinking about doubling, moving on to think about multiplication. Lots of you are good at doubling already but it’s important we practise this first before we go on to the multiplication.
Today you will need some objects. Choose up to ten, or twenty if you’re more confident. They can be buttons, or pieces of pasta, stones, whatever is to hand. Take a handful, counting them 1 to each object. Then double them. If you are confident with this, do it in your head and time yourself. If you are practising hard, choose the same amount again – is if you had five, pick another five. This is a double.

Squares boardFinally, we are going to be thinking about space. I’d like you to see if you can find out as much as you can about Space X. This link is a good place to start  Space X but see if you can find out;

  • What is Space X?
  • What will it do?
  • Why is it special?

Have a really lovely day, I hope you enjoy the learning! Keep emailing me and I will reply when I am home.

Dear Ash Class

Nearly at half term, you’ve worked so hard, I am really impressed by all the lovely things you are sending me. Keep at it!
Todays tasks are below, I hope you enjoy them.
Todays phonics game is a Kim’s game, or tray game. You will need to look at the screen for a while, but if you can’t, ask a grown up to set up a similar game for you.

Phonics Kim’s Game

For maths, please try this worksheet. You don’t have to write the times in, you can just tell your grown up. Telling the Time

If you are less confident with your time telling, have a go with your home made clock.

Today an artist called Rob Biddulph is aiming to break a world record for the worlds largest art lesson. It’s at 4.00. Why not register and join in? You will know his art from a lot of the books we have shared. Draw with Rob

For science I’d like you to build an animal habitat. Can you collect items that you think would make a good habitat and put them together in a shoe box. Can you talk to your grown up about what you have chosen and why. Where would the animal find these things? Why would it be a good habitat? If you can, send me a picture of your work that I can share on the blog.

Finally, why not sign up for Mission X? It’s got some great sports challenges coming up and I think you might enjoy it! Mission X

See you soon,

Love

Happy Wednesday everyone,

I hope you’re enjoying the lovely sunshine and getting out in the countryside. Next week is half term and although plans might have changed, I hope you have some fun things planned. We were supposed to be going camping so we will camp in the garden for a few nights!

Todays work is as follows:

Maths. Lots of you are getting more confident with telling the time, knowing the days and the months. Can you solve these reasoning problems? (NOTE : the shaded blue areas are the answers!)

In English, I’d like you to play live action Boggle! You need pieces of paper with all the letters of the alphabet on them. Make a 4x 4 grid like the one below. How many words can you make in a minute? Here is an example.

Finally here is a story for you, you may know it well! Charlotte chose it.Peter Rabbit

Don’t forget to do some reading everyday, and have a go on numbots and phonicsplay. The links are below.

Morning!

How are you getting on with telling the time? And more importantly, are you remembering the months and days? You could write the date at the top of each days work, which would help embed it.

  1. What day is it today?
  2. What day is it tomorrow?
  3. What day was it yesterday?
  4. What day will it be in 8 days time?
  5. How many days are there in a week?

Have a little recap by watching this video Telling the time

And then I’d like you to make your daily timetable, it can look however you like but should contain a minimum of 4 pictures of things that happen in your day, with the times that they happen. It could look a bit like this.

For phonics we are going to play a flash card game, the same as we would play in class. You need to read the flash card and then move on to the next one. You could challenge yourself to also look away from the screen and write down the words, and then use them in a sentence if you wish. These are Phase 3 words so you should be confident in reading them.
Phonics flash cards

In Science we are going to think about the parts of an animal and how they are different, or the same, to us. See if you can remember all your body parts from last week.

If you have a pet, you could use them for this task. If not then you can use any animal you like. Here is a word mat, to help you with the task.

Draw your animal carefully on paper. Use a ruler to draw straight lines  to the body parts that you know. Carefully label them, using neat handwriting and checking your spelling. If you can’t think of your own sheet, try this one.

You can talk to your grown up about the parts, or cut them out and stick them if you have a printer. If you have any toy animals, such as plastic farm animals, you could label them with pieces of paper.

My children made a family band today. Although it was quite noisy, they had a good time and enjoyed using and making musical instruments, keeping a beat and making up tunes. I played my oboe and my husband played the piano (it sounds better than it was!) and it was nice to talk about how music has made. Could you find out if your parents ever played a musical instrument? Can you make music with instruments in your home, your voice or your shaker?

Finally…..this is one of my very favourite story tellers, telling one of my favourite stories. I hope you enjoy it! http://CBeebies Bedtime Stories, 751. Tom Hardy – There’s a Tiger in the Garden: www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/m000hqz3 via @bbciplayer

Have a fantastic day!

Hi Ash Class

Wow, time flies! We’ve done a whole half of the summer term at home. I have really missed sharing the learning with you all together, but I have so enjoyed sharing the uniqueness of this situation with you and seeing how you’re adapting and changing to it.

For maths this week we will continue to look at telling the time. Please keep updating your calendar daily so you keep recapping the months and days. On Friday I asked you to make a clock, if you haven’t you can make one now, or you could use a toy clock. Please ask your grown up to give you five “o’clock” times. Can you show each one on your clock? Can you do the same with half past times? Keep practising – but it is important that you are physically doing it on a clock and seeing what happens to both the big and little hands. Can you describe how they are changing?

If you would like to practise online, try here  Clock and get your grown up to set the clock, and you read it. See if you can set the clock and they read it.

For English, I’d like you to listen to this story and follow my instructions. You’re listening for rhyming pairs. Can you write them down? Can you say the different ways that a sound is made? Once Upon a Time

Plus, I have made a short video reminding you about letter formation and upstrokes. You can watch it hereHandwriting

Finally, I said last week that we would be thinking about animals in our local area. Please could you keep a diary this week of any animals you see while you’re out and about. You could draw the animals, write them down, or make a poster. Some of the animals I have seen have included a fox, a deer and lots of cats! If you like you could extend it to include birds, insects or fish. Look out for smuses!
See you soon, enjoy the sunshine coming back this week.
Love

PS. Make sure you are doing a little bit of reading EVERY DAY too. X

Hello Ash!

Hope you are all ok and enjoying some of the learning challenges. It looks like the sun will be out and it will be lovely and warm again by next week, so that’s fantastic!

I’m putting a variety of tasks on today, some are little and some are big, so you can choose what you want to do depending on how you feel.
English. Something helpful you can do is use play-doh. This will strengthen your hands and improve your hand writing, and the action of making the letters and words will embed it more. I make play doh using a 1/2, 1/2, 1 recipe. So a half cup of water, a half cup of salt and a whole cup of flour. You can add any smells and colours you like. Once you have made some you need to roll out long sausages, this is a challenge in itself because you have to think about the pressure you apply, and pulling your hands gently apart to lengthen it. Once you have 4 or 5 sausages, you can make some letters, sounds or words. Try Phase 3 or Phase 4 sounds, or the tricky words we used earlier in the week.

If your phonics are good and you fancy something different, I want you to work on your toy. Imagine a big toy manufacturer has contacted you and they want to sell your toy. You need to create an advert to make people want to buy it. You could do this in the form of a poster, or a video advert if you have a tablet. You must;

  • Include some adjectives to describe your toy.
  • Describe what it’s for and who might want to play with it.
  • Tell us what it does.
  • Tell us why we should buy YOUR toy.
  • Make sure to include a picture of your toy.
  • If it’s a video advert you could just talk about the toy.

Please make sure you test your toy works in the way you want it to, and if it doesn’t, have a think about why. This is called evaluation and is an important part of DT.

For example, here is my evaluation of my lava lamp:

I followed the instructions carefully so I am not sure why it didn’t work. Next time I will try some different instructions. I did not choose a good bottle as it was quite leaky and messy, which is not good!”

Next, I have a maths sheet for you. If you cannot print it, your grown up can ask you the questions and you can answer verbally. Find it here:

Days of the week

If you can, it would be good to make a clock, with hands. Draw around a plate, Mark the numbers down (good number practise) and make some hands. Make sure one hand is longer than the other. You can blu tac them in place and change them to different times. I’ll set some on Monday.

I also promised some problem solving. During the Second World War, an amazing group of people worked in a place called Bletchley Park to decode messages that were being sent between the enemy. This helped us win the war. My granny was one of those people! So today, you have a code breaking challenge…The grid below is 1-20 with ‘a’ being 1, ‘b’ being 2 and so on. Can you work out the sum, giving a letter as your answer? And can you count in ‘b’ to ‘bo’ using only letters? Put your answers in the comments or email me!

Finally, in our house we love a den! It’s a great way to be creative, solve problems and work with other people in your family. The only rule is you MUST CLEAR UP!

Here is a link to a website with lots of great den ideas Den building

Have a lovely weekend, keep working hard and doing your best, you were all doing so well when all this began and I know you can keep it up.

Story time….The Koala who could

Hiya!

Hope everyone is ok. Did anyone manage to make a lava lamp? Mine went all weird and then Charlotte tried to drink it, so we gave up!

Today’s game is a version of an online game you know really well. If you would rather play it online you can find it here Phonics Play along with lots of other games.
If you want to play it in real life, this is what you need to do….. You need two teddies (a weird looking one, and a more normal looking one, if you have such a thing) and some word cards. You could use your Lego bricks, if you made them, or the paper pieces from your treasure hunt.
Real or Alien?

As always, if you feel you do not need the phonics practise, you can practise writing simple sentences, retelling stories that you know well (Cinderella, Red Riding Hood etc.) and working on letter formation and use of punctuation.

For Maths there are a couple of worksheets I would like you to do, on top of changing your calendar. I did some training today and tomorrow will be some problem solving, so this will be your last day of work on this. Make sure you keep practising. Cut and Stick months of the year.

Months of the year questions

Hopefully you are ready for your big DT toy build! There are some specific skills and questions I would like you to think about while you build, perhaps talk about them with your grown up.

  • How should you be holding your scissors to cut safely and accurately.
  • Which materials have you chosen and why? What are their properties?
  • Who do you think is likely to play with your toy?
  • Where are they likely to play with it?
  • How are you fastening the materials together? Why have you chosen those fastenings?

Remember that this isn’t a junk modelling project, you are working on developing specific skills which are really important – fine and gross motor skills, cutting (strong hands and fingers mean better handwriting!) as well as making choices and decisions.

I would love to see photos of your finished toys. I can make a collage and post it to the blog to inspire others!

Finally some PE. I am going to look like a terrible PE teacher when we get back, after all the amazing PE input during this time. However, here is the fantastic Andy, of Oddsocks and Dinosaur Adventures game, doing some short burst workouts, which you might find to be a nice change! Andy’s Wild Workout

Stay well, love

Hello!

So today’s task requires some Lego bricks. These could be Lego, duplo or any other brick. If you don’t have any bricks, pieces of paper will give the same end goal. Pieces of brio train track would also work. You need to write on the bricks, I used a sharpie which wipes off with a bit of nail varnish remover and also comes off in the dishwasher. If you don’t want to write on the bricks, just use paper.
Here is the task Lego words

For maths, there is a worksheet to do, which you can find and print here Today and tomorrow

I’ve also made this game for you, which you can play on your own. If you can’t use a screen for long enough to play it, you can play it with a sibling or adult. Get them to say a day/month and then you have to say the day/month before, or after. Game

For DT, I’d like you to find all the materials that you need to make your toy. Part of what we learn in Year 1 is how to make choices about what we need, and to keep our work spaces tidy. This means you shouldn’t scatter your house with recycling! Collect everything you need, including cutting apparatus (scissors) and fastening bits, like glue, staples and tape. Put all the pieces together, ready to build on Thursday. You could also think about our science work on materials – think about what the properties of each material are and whether they are suitable.

Finally, thinking about emotions. Yesterday you talked about ways you react to your emotions and how you can calm yourself. Sometimes in schools we have sensory areas or sensory rooms. Often these contain lamps like lava lamps which are really calming to watch. You can try to make a lava lamp today – but only if your grown up says you have enough equipment. I tried to make one yesterday and it didn’t work that well, so you will hopefully have more success! Try these links.

Science Bob lava lamps

Lava lamp no Alka seltzer

I hope you’re all getting on ok, and you’re staying safe and well,

Love

Hi Ash Class

I hope you got on okay with yesterday’s challenges. It was so windy yesterday wasn’t it! I hope the sunshine comes back soon.
Today’s phonics/English task is a treasure hunt. You will need a grown up to help you prepare it. You need to write down some of our common exception words (tricky words) on small pieces of paper. A grown up can do this, or you can. You can find these words here Year-1-Common-Exception-Word-Mat_ver_1 and you can practise the song here Tricky words song

Once you have written the words down, a sibling or grown up needs to hide them around the house! When they have done this, off you go! See if you can find all the words. You could make a tick sheet like this one, to make sure you find them all. It will also help to write them down twice.
Finally, you can try and write down a sentence, or a story and use each word in it!

For our maths work we will be continuing to think about the days of the week and the months of the year. This is really important! Make sure you have changed your calendar today.
Please have a look at these two games. If you can not access the computer or email, you can use your days of the week cards to sequence them.
Roy the Zebra
BBC Bitesize

Continuing our DT work, we are going to be thinking about how to make something which has a purpose, and is appealing to look at. Appealing means it looks nice. I’d like you to design a new toy. Later in the week you will be asked to make it, so try to keep it simple and think about what materials you have at home. Kitchen cloths make excellent hand puppets (and can be drawn on with felt tip, stapled and glued with pritt stick) and cereal boxes have useful cardboard. Cotton reels, plastic baby wipe lids and loo rolls are also useful.
Please design this with labels and keeping it as neat as possible.

Finally, we are going to think about our emotions. I’ve chosen a story about emotions today and tomorrow we are going to think about ways to calm down when we feel anxious or stressed. Can you talk to your grown up today about what they do when they feel stressed? I eat biscuits and read books!

Feelings

Remember, keep getting your exercise, as I know you all are – I see lots of you out and about. Next week we will be thinking about animals and birds in our local environment, so you could start to spot them this week. I learned a new word today, “smuse” which is a word to describe where a hedge has been all flattened by an animal squeezing through. Can you see any smuses while you’re out and about?

See you soon,

Love
